Master thesis - Gaze To Object Mapping (GTOM)

Gaze To Object Mapping (GTOM) is ubiquitous in modern eye tracking APIs. While it may seem to a layman that simply getting the gaze vectors from the eye tracker should be enough, this is simply not the case. When designing gaze interactions in an application, be it a game or anything else, you are almost always interested in what the user is looking at rather than where on the screen they are looking. Consequently, given the raw gaze data, to be able to do anything useful you first have to project that raw data in some fashion to get the underlying object. Understanding this, the problem is then shifted from "Is raw data enough?" to "How do we best perform GTOM?".

The aim of this project is to try and answer that second question. Your task will be to combine an already existing GPU implementation to an already existing machine learning system and measure its relative performance with existing technology. You will have access to engineers who have worked on these systems but we expect you to be proactive and learn on your own time as well as during work hours to be able to reach a solution in the allotted time.

We believe you: 

  • have knowledge in at least two of the following three language; C++, C# and Rust
  • have experience in either Unity or UE4. 
  • are doing your last year at an Engineering Physics program or similar.

During this project you are going to learn the remaining skills and you will have the opportunity to test your solution in real games,both in desktop and XR. You will finish this master thesis with writing a report on the results.
